It's tough to keep just one horse, isn't it?
Mick

Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:54 pm

yeah you have to pick your battles, like with story, he doesn't rear up anymore (knock on wood) so i just ignore hit front end hops. and those are getting less. i don't want to sell him, i hope i sell my about the horse saddle so i can keep him.

I think this is an issue where Piper and I have a truce, and it's going to stay that way. Pick your battles.

He's definitely cribbing, and it's been years now, so it is ingrained. The collar limits it in the stall, but I suspect he hangs out a lot in the shed when he's turned out, getting his fix. Fortunately the rest of the herd prefers grass, so that keeps him away from the shed more in the summer.
Mick

hmmm...does he crib a lot or is he just chewing?
Jo Ann

He's always been low, but he's not on the bottom, and he has his mare. He's pretty content doing his own thing. And my herd's pretty quiet--he doesn't get picked on.

where is he i the pecking order? has he sunk in the list
Jo Ann

Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:44 pm

Yeah--I read that in Equus this week. I don't know what Piper's stressed about. He's got a pretty easy life at the moment.
Mick

did you know they think cribbing is a response to gastris or ulcers. cribbing causes excess saliva and saliva has a base in it and helps with the stomack.

Piper's contenting himself right now with trying to sneak in and explore everyone else's stalls, but in the past he was into unfastening any latches and locks he could get to. When I finally foiled him with a padlock, he started cribbing. And he watches for my reaction.

doc likes to pretend he is eating grass and then reach out to the side and step on my foot. when he's mad at me of course...
Jo Ann

Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:38 pm

And I love him dearly for it.
Mick

Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:37 pm

I have one like that. My Quarterpony Piper is too smart for his own good, and likes to do things just to see if he can get away with it. He watches my reaction.
Mick

Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:36 pm

yeah he is...he can be such a booger. and then turn around and be a bonehead
Jo Ann

Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:36 pm
